Horse Trials History

NMZ of PCV (formerly Yeringberg) Horse Trials

The annual premier zone competition organised by the NMZ Committee and Clubs for both Pony Club and EV riders. It is a competition consisting of dressage, cross country and show jumping tests or phases. Penalties are incurred with the lowest score being the winner in each class.

Weber & Lawler Shields for the NMZ Horse Trials Teams Competition

The NMZ Horse Trials began in 1964 at the Weber property “Killara” in Sunnyside Rd Seville. After the 1978 PCAV State Horse Trials Championships at the DePury property “Yeringberg” in Maddens Lane Coldstream, the NMZ Horse Trials were moved to Yeringberg.

The Shields are perpetual trophies awarded since 1973, for the winning Pony Club Team in the NMZ Annual Horse Trials Teams Competition. They were donated by the Weber family (Seville) and the Lawlor family (Lilydale Pony Club). Both Shields have been contested every year; however, since 2017, each Shield is contested in alternate years. In 2023, the Weber Shield will be contested.

Teams may consist of 3 or 4 riders from North Metro Zone clubs, including any combination of riders from Grade 1 to Grade 4. The best three scores (least penalty points) from a possible count of four, are counted for the Teams HT result. Composite NMZ Club teams, and teams from non-NMZ clubs may compete.

Off the Track (OTT) Horses at the Horse Trials

The Off the Track program, run by Racing Victoria, aims to facilitate the placement of retired thoroughbred racehorses in second careers, such as pony clubbing. It promotes the network of Racing Victoria Acknowledged Retrainers across the state, driving demand for the breed as performance and pleasure horses, and educating the community about the various life after racing options, versatility of use, and the appropriate care and retraining of the thoroughbred. PCV works with OTT to ensure pony club riders have access to suitable horses, and the NMZ Horse Trials acknowledges riders who compete with OTT horses.
